A small memorial service was held Friday afternoon for Brian Michael Miller. The 34-year-old transient was struck by a car and killed February 11 while crossing Pacific Coast Highway near Serra Retreat in darkness close to 7 o’clock in the evening.

Fifteen people gathered at the Malibu Community Labor Exchange to pay respect to Miller, who was fondly remembered as “loved by many people” at the Cross Creek shopping area, where he spent many days. Miller was struggling in and out of recovery, and may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Although he was homeless, Miller was employed at times as a dog walker and house sitter. He was described as a “free spirit” by local resident Judy Ziehm.

Miller leaves behind an eight-year-old daughter.
