  • The speeding driver who killed a man on PCH last week … still in a hospital.
  • The man he killed … leaves a dependent …. his 89 year old grandmother.
  • Water rates go up again.
  • And Malibu’s Claudia Lane is a -runaway- nationwide phenomena.

This is Malibu’s Only Local Daily News.

It’s the Monday December 4th edition… from Radio Malibu …. 99-point-1 … KBUU News.

Good morning …. I’m Hans Laetz reporting.

80 MPH Peak Gusts Tonight In Mtns, 60 MPH On Sand

Just arriving right now here at Trancas ((( at 9 o’clock)))… Santa Anas.

Wind gusts of 31 miles an hour right now (((  at 9 o’clock  ))) west of Malibu … in the mountains above Deer Creek.

21 miles an hour at Leo Carrillo …. at Malibu’s west end.

Only 11 miles an hour up at Camp 8 … in the mountains at Malibu’s east end.

The strongest Santa Anas of the year are aiming at Malibu.

Maybe … the strongest Santa Anas in years.

A massive high pressure system is parked over the intermountain west.

It will squeeze air out of the deserts,,,, through the mountains … to the oceans.

Cold air … this time.

But strong winds … up to 50 miles per hour … are possible today along the Malibu coastline this morning.

Tonight … Malibu is in line to see 70 to 80 mile per hour wind gusts along the coast.

Los Angeles County firefighters are sending a strike team to the Malibu area this morning.

That puts five extra fire engines and about 25 firefighters into the heart of the fire-prone Santa Monica Mountains.

The county will also augment staffing and position more engine companies in strategic

fire stations throughout the county.

A small brushfire broke out this morning in Chatsworth …. in the hills above the west end of the San Fernando Valley.

It was put out … at less than one acre.

Crash Guy Remains In Hospital

The man who was behind the wheel of a speeding stolen car remains hospitalized this morning.

A short police chase was called off … but seconds later … a gardener named Juan Antonio Castillo … 28 and of Inglewood … had been killed.

Last Wednesday.

The driver’s name has not been released … but L A County sheriff’s deputies plan to arrest him as soon as he can be taken out of a hospital jail ward.

The man’s last known address was a homeless shelter in Venice … according to the L-A county sheriff’s office.

Crime technicians and detectives were still processing evidence over the weekend.

A source close to the investigation tells KBUU News that the traffic services division in downtown Los Angeles is doing toxicology tests on the driver’ blood …  to see if the driver was drunk or on other drugs.

Also… they need to confirm the stolen car report for the Mazda M-6 … stolen two days earlier in West Los Angeles LAPD territory.

Fund Established For Poor Soul He Killed On PCH

Malibu residents are being asked to help Juan Antonio Castillo’s grandmother …. who was being supported by the gardener when he was killed.

ABC-7 television reports Castillo was working to support his 89-year-old grandmother …

She had raised him as a child … after Castillo lost his mother in childbirth.

His father was killed when Castillo was a little boy.

His family told Channel 7 that Castillo had loved riding his motorcycle, going fishing and playing soccer.

Among his long-term goals was Castillo’s plan to keep supporting his grandmother, who is nearly 90.

An account has been supported to help the abuela.

A link to the GoFundMe account has been posted at the KBUU websites.

NHL Owner Drops $120 MILLION In Bu

Another unbelievable house sale in Malibu.

A low-slung …. modern house two houses down the street from the landmark Cher’s house just sold.

85 million dollars.

And that’s just for the house …. the artwork and furnishings also went in the deal … total …. 120 million dollars.

Both figures are records for L-A and Malibu.

The buyer is Canadian investor and Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz.

He is in escrow on a deal to purchase celebrity real estate agent Kurt Rappaport’s opulent Malibu beach house for $85 million.

The seller … Realtor Kent Rappaport.

He had been renting out the house … for 750 thousand dollars a month.

Six-acres … seven bedrooms … ten bathrooms … screening room … gym … game room …. a swimming pool the length of half a football field.

But no oceanfront.

And the sales of multimillion dollar houses like this affects all of us in Malibu.

The negotiations between Malibu and Santa Monica …. over splitting the school districts … is hung up on the lucrative property tax revenues going skyward in Malibu.

Malibu’s property tax rolls are becoming an embarrassment of riches.

And Santa Monica is reluctant to give up gold mine.

[Headline corrected at 13:44 to make it NHL instead of NFL, auto-correct error.]

Malibu Water Rates To Inch Up Again

Malibu water rates are going up.

2 point 3 percent.

LA County Waterworks District 29 says this water rate hike goes solely to pay wholesale water rate charges.

The average yearly water bill in Malibu will grow 10 dollars … from 456 dollars … to 466 dollars per year.

Water rates have been hiked to pay for new pipes and tanks …. to bring the system top to fire department requirements.

But the county has run out of money … meaning that many Malibu residents are already paying increased water rates …. for fire protection they will NOT get.

Claudia Lane Claudia Lane Claudia Lane

Malibu’s Claudia Lane crossed the finish line 72 seconds ahead of the nearest elite competitor Saturday … at the Foot Locker West Regional race at Mount San Antonio College.

That’s 3 point 1 miles …. at a speed of 18 miles an hour.
