Malibu’s Claudia Lane has just become the state champion in girls cross country, shattering the previous record in the Girls Division 4 Final.

At the championship race held Saturday, Nov. 25, at Woodward Park in Fresno, the Malibu High School junior outran the best high school runners in the state to crush the old record of Simi Valley’s Sarah Baxter (set in 2012) for a race time of 16:30.3—beating the old record by a solid 10 seconds. Claudia’s time was the fastest girls time in Woodward Park history—she now has two of the top 10 all-time fastest girls races at the park, according to her coach, Mark Larsen. It was a personal record for Lane as well.

Her time is the fastest in the country as she prepares for the upcoming Footlocker National Championship next Friday, Dec. 8—a race she won in 2016.

Commenting to Runnerspace, the 16-year-old said, “All the support—just being able to be surrounded by such amazing runners” was one of the most special parts of the race.
