Malibu Might Vent Tonight AT 5:30 School Board Meeting

Malibu residents tonight have a chance this evening to react to the Santa Monica school board … which told Malibu it would reverse course on the proposed independent Malibu school district.

The school board has its regular meeting … and this time it’s at the Malibu City Hall.

The school board scheduled a special meeting to talk about Malibu independence … last Monday … and that meeting was inexplicably held not in Malibu … but in Santa Monica.

The board does rotate its meetings … every fourth or fifth session … out to Malibu.

Tonight’s meeting starts with a call for public comment … at 5:30 … at Malibu City Hall.

The Monday meeting has Malibu talking.

As we reported … some Santa Monica school board members have gone back on their promises … and decided not to let Malibu have local control of its schools after all.

Instead … talks will begin between the district and Malibu … over some sort of limited autonomy.

The Monday night meeting has left school parents and the city council furious.

AMPS has posted an acid-tongued note … saying it’s nice that the Santa Monica school board is meeting tonight discuss what they call more lovely additions to their new Santa Monica campus … while completely ignoring Malibu children.

An awful rat infestation, putrid restroom conditions, and PCBs still in the old wrecked building …says AMPS.

Writes one parent … Scott Hosfeld …

“Unbelievable…is there no recourse? I have already pulled my kids out due first to the environmental irresponsibility … and now because we are the powerless tail paying all the bills for the big dog….!”

The outgoing Malibu High P T S A president Melanie Goudzwaard urges parents to “get involved and support AMPS…

“We’ve been working on this for seven years!

“We need supporters, donors, word spreaders, people to attend meetings…  Plenty to be done and AMPS has been leading the way on this for a long time now.”

Again . the Santa Monica school board members met tonight at 5:30 at Malibu City Hall.

There’s a call to the public on the agenda … but it’s not clear exactly what time that will occur.

Forecast: Drizzle, Drizzle, Drizzle, Drizzle, Rain, Rain

Rain is falling in Los Angeles this morning … a heavy drizzle.

Not here at Trancas … though.

Malibu may get a dose of actual winter rain … but not until midweek.

Cool and unsettled weather will continue across the area through  arly next week.

There will be some drizzle or light showers today tomorrow and Saturday.

Sunday and Monday … a chance of more widespread light rainfall.

Tuesday and Wednesday a  possibility of a more significant  period of rain.

Automatic Circuit Reclosers May Have Caused Brushfires

On the night of October Eighth …. a firestorm spread across the mountains and vineyards north of San Francisco.

The San Francisco Chrnoicle reports that the Pacific Gas and Electric power lines wup there are programmed to try to restart themselves in case service was interrupted — even if they were knocked to the ground or tangled in a tree.

These are called reclosers — similar to automated circuit breakers —

They are set to shoot pulses of electricity through lines that have tripped off . and if the power does not short out … these reclosers would automatically restart power.

That rasies the question …. how do the power lines in Malibu work???

Our utility … Soithern California Edison … uses automatic reclosers on its system.

That’s why a downed power line … even if it looks dead…. should be avoided at all costs.

Power may automatically come back.

Southern California Edison turns off the automatic function

If, however, the lines were in contact with branches or brush, those pulses of electricity could have started a fire.

State investigators are trying to determine whether PG&E’s power lines played a role in triggering the wildfires that swept across Wine Country that night, destroying whole neighborhoods and killing at least 43 people. No cause has been determined.

Reclosers are a key tool for preventing blackouts, but they have been implicated in wildfires before. The danger they pose is significant enough that two of California’s three investor-owned utility companies — San Diego Gas & Electric Co. and Southern California Edison — routinely reprogram them during fire season so that the devices don’t automatically try to restart power lines.

PG&E, California’s largest utility, has been conducting a pilot program this year to do the same thing, spokesman Keith Stephens said. Some of PG&E’s reclosers in the North Bay were part of that pilot program, he said. When the windstorm hit, they functioned as programmed and let power lines that went dark stay dark.

But other reclosers in the area were not part of the experiment, Stephens said. Instead, they were programmed to try up to three times to restart power lines that had shut down.
