Hitting below the belt

The comments made by John Mazza in last week’s paper demonstrated just how far an individual is willing to go in order to get elected. Unfortunately, that happens much too frequently in Malibu. In this case, John’s accusations against the failures of the City Council and city grant writer Barbara Cameron, were so far from the truth that, were it a boxing match, the referee would call foul.

John artfully turns the successes of this council into terrible failures. How ridiculous and obvious is that? I can remember previous councils that could only point to the acquisition of new bus benches to demonstrate their effort. He then maligns Barbara Cameron, the city’s grant writer, for her failure to write enough grants. In truth, the city was not receiving any grant money until Barbara was hired. Since then, thanks to her, the city has received over $12 million, including an additional $7 million she worked on with the city staff.

Taking the low road in order to achieve high ground is so easy in Malibu because very few people pay enough attention to what’s happening to recognize truth from fiction. As a result, they believe the John Mazzas of this town. Get more informed, Malibu, so that John’s end will not justify his means.
