City of Malibu Mayor Rick Mullen presents a proclamation to John Honingsfeld observing the anniversary.

This Friday, March 30, the Malibu Senior Center will be commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, during which Jews forced to live in the ghetto bravely resisted the occupying Nazi forces. The commemoration will begin at noon and is expected to go until 1:30 p.m.

The event will include a speech, poetry readings in Yiddish and English, and English and Yiddish songs. It was organized by John Honingsfeld, who asked for—and received—city support for the commemoration.

“I was able to get the Polish diplomat to come —the Polish diplomat in Los Angeles, to come,” Honingsfeld said. “I was able to get the Israeli diplomat in Los Angeles to come. A representative from the state senator’s office and a representative from the state assemblyman’s office. And many others—many will be coming, singing and reciting historical information.”

The event will be followed by a reception.
