Former Pepperdine University tennis star Simon Aspelin won an Olympic silver medal for Sweden in the men’s tennis doubles on Saturday. It was the best Olympic result ever by a Wave tennis player.
Aspelin and Thomas Johansson of Sweden lost to Switzerland’s duo of Roger Federer and Stanislas Warwinka, 6-3, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, in the gold-medal match. The Swedish pair had won their first four matches in the single-elimination Olympics tournament.
Aspelin is the second Pepperdine tennis player to ever medal at the Olympics. Brad Gilbert won a bronze medal in the men’s singles competition in 1988. Aspelin is ranked ninth in the world in doubles tennis. He was part of a duo that won the 2007 U.S. Open. He earned All-American honors at Pepperdine in each of his four years from 1994 to 1997.
