A tanker truck crash this morning …. PCH has been reopened … damaged power lines … the cleanup continues.

Plans to widen PCH at the Malibu Lagoon are finalized by the city.

The Navy cancels plans to send a ship to Malibu.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

It’s the   ((((  Friday  ))) edition … from Radio Malibu  …. 97 point 5 K B U.

Good morning Calle Principio!

A major traffic crash early this morning.

A truck was involved in a crash … at 5:05 … on the P C H at Corral Canyon Road.

A fire hydrant was clipped … and power lines went down.

No one was hurt … there was no fire.

The gas tanker truck’s cargo trailer was NOT punctured … apparently.

But the tractor’s diesel tank was pierced …. causing a small diesel spill on the highway.

P C H was down to one lane for nearly 2 hours.

Eastbound traffic was held up.

At this hour (((( 8 a-m )))) traffic in both directions has one lane each.

A medical chopper was called in to Encinal Canyon Road this morning just before 6.

A person fell down some stairs and was severely injured …. according to the LA County fire department.

It was nine years ago that developer Don Schmitz won approval to build a shopping center next to the library …

Nine years ago that the city council told him his La Paz development could only proceed if he came up with a plan to widen P C H at Cross Creek Road.

And the original plan was to tear out a landmark sycamore tree …. been there for maybe 80 years … on P C H at the Malibu Lagoon.

An uproar ensured … remember the “Tree That Saved Malibu” ???

It seems the city approved the shopping center without considering the environmental impact down at the lagoon of widening P C H … prompting years of delay while that oversight was fixed.

Protesters asked why the tree had to be cut down … when there was state right of way across the road … the sidewalk could be moved towards the gas station and remain on public property.

After years of study and delay … the widening of P C H at Cross Creek Road appears to have been approved by the city and Caltrans.

City planners yesterday said the final road widening plans have been filed.

Bike lanes and a right turn lane … from westbound P C H onto Cross Creek Road …. included.

The sidewalk was moved.

The big tree … saved.

Developers said it couldn’t be done …. but it was.

The final plan has gone now to the state Coastal Commission …. a 10-day appeal period has begin.

Assuming no one appeals …. this is the final obstacle apparently removed before  construction of the La Paz shopping center … and the widening of P C H  … can begin.

Labor Day is six weeks away … and the annual carnival and fair at the Kiwanis Club Chili Cookoff is coming.

The city is preparing the annual temporary permit for the big event.

Past years have seen some people who live near the Chili Cook Off object to the noise and lights from the 3-day fair.

But those complaints have died down in recent years.

One of the unhappy neighbors has been Steve Urhing … who lives near the Cook-Off.

But in past years … as a private citizen he has said he was happy with the Cook Off plans.

The city planning director says she will issue the Chili Cook Off its permits … unless the Planning Commission objects.

Uhring now sits on the Planning Commission …

The Malibu Times is reporting that the U-S Navy has called off it’s scheduled port call … for Malibu.

The Navy says it has other needs for its ships.

The local Navy League chapter … and other volunteers … were hoping to have a similar event … similar to the visit of the U S S John Paul Jones.

But … the Department of Defense has other plans.

A huge great white shark chomped into an ocean kayak off Santa Barbara yesterday .

Bret Z. Jackson, 40, of Los Angeles, spent a terror-filled few minutes in the ocean water after the shark bit nto the watercraft

Jackson said the shark approached from beneath, then came up from the side, its teeth only inches away from digging into Jackson’s body.

Jackson was helpless as the shark pushed his kayak sideways … then flipped over … plunging him into the water.

One minute passed, then two.

The shark didn’t reappear and Jackson was able to flag down a sailboat about 200 feet away.

The beach in Santa Barbara was closed.

A large number of full-size sharks has been thriving near the shore of the islands off Santa Barbara for decades … but they are rarely seen along the mainland coast.

A large number of juvenile sharks usually are seen in Santa Monica Bay … but not usually full-sized great whites.

Overall property tax revenue will rise again in Los Angeles County, thanks to a brisk real estate market and construction boom.

The assessed value of all taxable property in the county jumped by 6.03 percent in 2017, which was slightly higher than last yea.

The L-A Daily News reports this is the seventh straight year that an increase was marked.

The net value of the county’s nearly 2.4 million properties totals 1.4 trillion dollars.

Under Proposition 13 … of course … the assessed value of a property cannot increase by more than 2 percent unless the property is sold …, or rebuilt.
