Due to the state’s ongoing efforts to clean up the ocean, Chris Lowe, who runs the shark lab at Cal State Long Beach, believes that’s what is responsible for the increase in the white shark population.

“Our front yard is the nursery ground for (baby) white sharks,” Lowe said, noting that adult white sharks come to Southern California coastal waters to give birth.

A steady increase of baby white sharks have been surfacing since 2005 as scientists continue to document the rise of these fish.

“White sharks are the top of the food chain. These are the biggest, meanest predators we have out there,” Lowe said.

Lowe spoke at the Southern California Discovery Lecture Series Friday where he talked about the “Return of Big Marine Predators to California Waters” along with addressing the issue of the increasing sharks.

The event Lowe spoke at was co-sponsored by Altsea, which showcased new technologies and scientific research. More lectures that will be free and open to the public are scheduled for August 1st, October 3rd and December 5th.
