The paddles in the middle of PCH … blamed for another death.

Divorce talks heat up tonight in Santa Monica.

The county shortchanges Malibu on water system repairs.

And feeding the homeless at Zuma Beach will be discontinued.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

It’s the   ((((  final   ))) edition of the (((  Thursday ))) news … from Radio Malibu  ….

Good morning Malibu Cliffside Drive!

Motorcyclist Dies After PCH/Guernsey Crash, SUV Driver Charged

The paddles in the center of Pacific Coast Highway are blamed for another death.

People heading to Malibu High were terrified by a crash last October 24th … at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway at Guernsey Avenue.

A motorcyclist was hit by an S U V that had turned left … in front of the oncoming rider.

KBUU News has learned that the motorcyclist died … at a hospital … three days after being helicoptered out from Zuma Beach.

And the driver of the car faces criminal charges …. manslaughter.

No names are available … for the driver … or … for the dead motorcyclist.

The charges are filed … despite the fact that the driver says her view of the oncoming traffic was blocked by yellow paddles installed in the center of the highway.

Caltrans put them there to prevent drivers from making U-turns … a problem that had claimed two lives in a row … several years ago,

Resident of the area say the paddles are too wide … and completely obscure vision of oncoming traffic around a slight bend in the road.

Similar problems were reported at the slight curve at paradise Cove … where a Malibu man on a motorcycle did not see a car that was being backed out of traffic.

He was killed instantly.

That motorcyclist’s view may have been obscured by the paddles.

A recent study by safety engineers for the city agrees that the paddles are unsafe … blocking views.

Caltrans will not comment …. citing lawsuits.

Divorce Talks Resume Tonight In Santa Monica

A huge crowd is expected at tonight’s Santa Monica school board meeting.

AMPS … the Advocates for a Malibu Public School System …. is beating the drums.

The school board will hear the results of a peace offering … of sorts … offered by the board to Malibu school parent groups …. and the city council.

The offer … limited autonomy … went over like a lead balloon.

The Malibu groups want an end to the two-city … non  contiguous school district. … which is an accident of history ,,,, dating back to when Malibu was too small for its own schools.

Santa Monica parents are now making their views known.

One says in a newspaper letter that … it’s not fair that Malibu would have more property tax revenue than Santa Monica … per student … after divorce.

Malibu parents counter that Santa Monica would still have more money per student than 97 percent of the schools in California …

The meeting is at 7:30 tonight in the school board headquarters … on 16th Street at Olympic Boulevard …. in Santa Monica.

Homeless Feedings To End ‘By Suggestion’

Dinners for the homeless at a Zuma Beach church will be ending.

Volunteers at Malibu Methodist Church say the city did not -TELL- them they had to stop.

The City Council strongly encouraged them to stop serving

Volunteers say the Methodist church has decided to stop serving Wednesday night dinners and hosting another volunteer group … S-O-S … serve dinners on Thursday nights.

The volunteers are hoping to resume helping the hungry people at a location that is not near houses and schools … possibly Malibu City Hall.

County May Be Shortchanging Malibu on Water Projects

The L-A County water lines that serve Malibu are falling apart.

And they are too small for the fire department to ensure they have sufficient water for fires.

The county’s first plan to rebuild the system was shot down by homeowners groups in the area north of us … concerned that the first plan would have opened the gates for more residential growth in the Santa Monica Mountains.

The plans have been downscaled … and in the views of some Malibu water system activists … reduced too much.

Paul Grisanti has been working on volunteer efforts to get reliable and sufficient water supplies for Malibu.

And he is very worried.

NEWSCART 77381 GRISANTI AAAA :16 QQQ ALLOW YOU TO REBUILD IT

“It is definitely not all that needs to be done.

“The whole impetus for this in the first place is that many neighborhoods in Malibu do not have an adequate fire flow – according to the fire department – so that, if a house burns down, they won’t allow you to rebuild it.” [END QUOTE]

And Grisanti tells KBUU News that the project has been downsized by the County ….

This … after rates were raised … with the promise that the projects would be built.

NEWSCART 77382 GRISANTI BBB :16 QQQQ PIPES OR TANKS.

‘If a neighborhood required pipes and tanks, they’ve authorized the pipes, they have not authorized the tanks.

“The other things they’ve done, is that some neighborhoods aren’t getting pipes -or- tanks.”  [END QUOTE]

One of the neighborhoods getting shortchanged …. Grisanti says … is the Encinal Highlands area of western Malibu.

Paul Grisanti has been following this issue for years …. campaigning for the creaky and leaky Malibu water system to be brought up to modern standards.

He wants to know what the county has been doing with the increased water rate revenues …. collected over the past few years … with the specific intent of fixing the system.

NEWSCART 77383 GRISANTI CCCC :11 QQQ 50 MILLION DOLLARS???

“Now we’re hearing they dont have enough money a,nd they’ve taken the project down from 110 million dollars to 59 million dollars.

“The question is … where’s the other 50 million dollars?”   [END QUOTE]

Paul Grisanti.

The county is having a public meeting on this tonight … 6:30 at Malibu City Hall.

MHS Volleyball Quest Ends At CIF

From the 99 point 1 sportsline …. Malibu High School’s volleyballers made it to the state C-I-F tournament … last night …

They were defeated …. by Foothill Tech … three to nothing.

That … sadly …eliminates Malibu from the tournament.

But the girls went 23 and 2 on the season … and we are told they are the first Malibu team to ever make it to the C I F tournament in the school’s history.
