All backcountry trails and fire roads in Point Mugu State Park will remain closed until May 23, a California State Parks official said Thursday after the massive Springs fire scorched 12,000 of the park’s 14,000 acres over the last week.
Craig Sap, State Parks’ Angeles district superintentent, said the hard closure was necessary while crews locate and extinguish hot spots and and assess trail hazards.Â
Once the hard closure expires next Thursday, May 23, parks officials plan to “temporarily restrict use [from] sunrise to sunset.”
“We haven’t determined how long that restriction will remain in place, but it will be as short as possible,” Sap said.Â
