Cindy Crawford Speaks at Malibu Unites Rally

In a segment that aired Tuesday morning, the first day of school, Malibu resident and supermodel Cindy Crawford told Maria Shriver she remained frustrated at the inaction of the Santa Monica-Malibu school district and was not sending her kids back to Malibu’s public schools.

She pressed for testing of “the source” of potential contaminants that have been found at Malibu High and Middle Schools, including window caulking where PCBs are known to exist in pre-1979 buildings.

The interview placed a national spotlight on the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and other places dealing with the same environmental issue, including Wisconsin and New York.

“I think that air testing and wipe testings are a great piece of the puzzle. Unless they’re testing every day, how do I know that every day it’s safe for my kid?” she told Shriver.

Air and dust samples have been tested at Malibu High, Middle School and Juan Cabrillo, and the district deemed all the classrooms safe to return to just days before classes began on Tuesday. However, Crawford and others believe the Federal government should change its standards on the safety of classrooms that were built between the 1950s and 1970s.
