Smothers Theatre plays host to live performances throughout the year.

Bertolt Brecht’s musical “The Threepenny Opera” is coming to Pepperdine University’s Smothers Theatre on April 6, 8 and 9 as part of the Mary Pickford-Stotsenberg Performances Series.

A student cast, led by Pepperdine theatre professor Bradley Griffith, will tell the story of Macheath — a London gangster whose marriage to Polly Peachum threatens to undermine the city’s Union of Beggars. The plot contains elements of epic theatre, which juxtaposes historical subjects with a radically deconstructed approach.

“The Threepenny Opera” is known to have helped pave the way for the political musicals of Stephen Sondheim, Kander and Ebb and others.

Performances will take place on April 6 and 8 at 7:30 p.m. and April 9 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at $10 for full-time Pepperdine students and $15 for the public. For more information and to purchase tickets, call 310.506.4522.
