LNG hearing to take place on clean air issues
A public hearing will take place on Monday in Oxnard regarding BHP Billiton’s application for a Clean Air Act permit for its proposed liquefied natural gas plant, Cabrillo Port, which, if approved, would be located off the Malibu coast. The hearing will take place at the Oxnard Performing Arts and Convention Center, located at 800 Hobson Way, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. More information can be obtained by emailing cabrilloportpermit@epa.gov
Swede pleads not guilty to Ferrari crash charges
Stefan Eriksson, the man who crashed a Enzo Ferrari on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu earlier this year, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court to seven felony and two misdemeanor charges related to the crash. Eriksson has been charged with three counts of embezzlement, three counts of grand theft and illegal gun possession. He has also been charged with two misdemeanor counts of drunken driving. He is currently being held in jail on $3 million bail and a federal immigration hold.
Pepperdine hosts guitar competition
Pepperdine University is hosting the Parkening, the world’s preeminent classical guitar competition. The competition began on Tuesday and will conclude on Friday.
Participating in the competition are 15 musicians who have been selected from around the world, including three from California: Michael Buatista of Cupertino, Fan-Chen Huang of Los Angeles, and Edward Trybek of Pasadena. The 15 competitors were narrowed to five semi-finalists on Wednesday and will be further whittled down to three finalists on Thursday. On that day, finalists will perform a concerto with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.
Competitors are judged on musicianship, tone, technique and stage presence. The Parkening boasts the largest prize purse of any classical guitar competition, with cash awards in excess of $50,000. It honors classical guitarist Christopher Parkening’s lifetime commitment to fostering musical excellence in young artists.
Fiesta to support education and wildlife
STAR Education and STAR ECO Station are hosting a fundraising gala, Fiesta de Sol y Flamenco, on June 10 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rancho Chiquita Restaurant in Malibu. The event will include Flamenco dancers, music, margaritas, an auction and Gerry Gilliland’s gourmet cuisine. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Wildlife Rescue Center and STAR’s Children’s Scholarship Fund. Tickets for Fiesta de Sol y Flamenco range from $150 to $250 and table sponsorships range from $1,500 to $2,500.

Malibu High’s ‘Aida’ to be televised
The Malibu High School performance of “Aida,” the musical that was staged last month at the school, will be televised on local channel 15 beginning on Saturday. The performance will air for the next three weeks on Saturdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sundays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Tuesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
