The Malibu Film Society announced in an email that the first two screenings of 2018 would be “The Florida Project” and “Slipaway.”
“The Florida Project,” starring Willem Dafoe (“Spider-Man”), follows the story of a six-year-old growing up at a motel just outside of the happiest place on Earth: Disney World. Dafoe is set to be honored with the Palm Springs International Film Festival’s Icon Award for the performance and is currently a nominee for the Golden Globes best supporting actor in a motion picture category.
Meanwhile, the “festival-circuit indie favorite” “Slipaway” is the story of a homeless young musician who moves in with an elderly widow. Co-directors and screenwriters Julia Butler and Daniel Mentz will be present for a Q&A session after the screening.
“The Florida Project” will screen on Jan. 6 at 7:30. “Slipaway” screens the following week on Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. To RSVP, visit malibufilmsociety.org.
