A small brushfire in Malibu Canyon sends smoke to the pier.

Massive cost blowout at the Broad Beach sand replacement project.

Monday’s school board is crucial … in the Malibu school divorce campaign.

And it’s a shark feeding frenzy … a water polo blowout.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

It’s the   ((((  Friday ))) edition of the news … from Radio Malibu  …. 97 point 5 K B U.

Good morning Stewart Ranch Road.

Malibu Canyon Brushfire Held To Less Than 1 Acre

A small brushfire early this morning in Malibu Canyon … quickly put out by L A County firefighters.

The small blaze was spotted on Malibu Canyon Las Virgenes Road at 7:17.

Trucks were rushed down from the temporary fire task force at King Gillette ranch … and they were on top of it in minutes.

It burned up a hillside … but forward progress was reported stopped at 7:53.

By 8:08 … the helicopters and bulldozer crews that were being brought in were turned around … as firefighters had hose lines all around the fire.

No structures were ever threatened.

Winds were light.

But the smoke drifted down the canyon … four miles … and had some people in  the Serra Estates worried.

Drivers on PCH at the pier could tell there was a fire in the area.

It’s largely out … as of 9 … firefighters were checking hot spots.

Massive costs increases for the Broad Beach sand replacement project … are reported.

The Malibu Times newspaper reports that the cost … originally thought to be 20 million dollars … is now estimated to be triple that … at 55 to 60 million dollars.

Two separate lawsuits have been filed … against the Broad Beach Geologic Hazard Abatement Assessment District … called by some by the acronym the G-HAAD.

Plans to truck in the sand remain … but the schedule has been slipping.

It’s now scheduled to begin next fall … with 22 thousand truckloads of sand to be driven in from Ventura County.

Homeowners along Broad Beach will be paying up to about 55 thousand dollars a year … for a small lot … to rebuild the beach.

That’s about double the original projections.

No government money is being spent on the project.

Six of the 131 property owners in the G-HAAD have filed lawsuits.

The G-HAAD is a government tax agency that was set up by the city and state ….  after a vote by the landowners …. and it has tax-levying authority.

The sand replenishment project plans to move ahead in September 2018.

When the sand washed away about 10 years ago … homeowners asked the state for permission to install a rock wall along the ocean to protect billions of dollars worth of property.

The state Coastal Commission said O-K … but the rocks are temporary and must be removed unless the beach is rebuilt.

The new sand will cover the rocks.

Last minute requests to bring in sand by barge from Canada … instead of the 22 thousand truck trips on P C H … have not been approved by the Coastal Commission.

Public Turnout Monday Is Important, AMPS Says

Malibu’s lone school board member … Craig Foster … is urging Malibu residents to attend the next school board meeting … next Monday in Santa Monica.

Foster says it is the most important meeting leading to the school board’s vote … on the 16th of November … as to whether to back the creation of a separate Malibu school district.

Advocates for Malibu Public Schools is beating the drums …  urging supporters of an independent school district to show up in Santa Monica for the final public discussion on the topic … before the crucial board meeting on the 16th..

Next Monday … the only topic on the agenda is the proposal to separatie the district into two independent entities.

It’s the final chance to make opinions known to the school board members.

AMPS hopes a strong Malibu turnout at school district headquarters on Monday will drive home the impact of seven years worth of work to sever ties with the City of Santa Monica and create a stand-alone school district.

A blue ribbon committee set up by the district asked that an independent company take a look at the figures … to make sure the split made financial sense.

The independent review by School Services of California has confirmed Malibu’s contention . that the district can split …  while leaving Santa Monica financially whole to operate a separate school district.

The school board meeting on Monday will be at the school district headquarters … at 16th Street at Olympic Boulevard … in Santa Monica.
