A 76 gas station on the corner Pacific Coast Highway and Corral Canyon Road got a rude wake-up call Wednesday morning when a driver crashed through the station’s corner signage.
The crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. when a male driver either lost control of his vehicle or fell asleep at the wheel on the westbound side of PCH, according to Sgt. Slutske of the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station. It is not known whether speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, Slutske said. The driver suffered head trauma and was airlifted to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.
The signature 76 globe was destroyed in the crash, along with signage that displays gas pricing. One unnamed witness reported hearing thunder-like sounds and seeing some flames emerge from under the vehicle.
