Timing is everything

Can someone explain the massive traffic jam that occurs every summer afternoon on the southbound side of PCH at Las Flores? Driving it at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 28, it took 17 minutes to get from the Malibu Pier to Las Flores. The light at Las Flores stays green for 45 seconds. In the summer, traffic backs up for miles. Perhaps the timing of the lights is the problem?

After you pass Las Flores, close to normal speeds resume. At Topanga, the southbound light stays green for 90 seconds, at Coastline 180 seconds is the norm. I don’t see hundreds of cars going up Big Rock, so perhaps the lights at Topanga and Coastline are better timed?

The garage doors between the pier and Las Flores are beautiful, but we have seen them enough, and the arrival at Duke’s entrance is celebrated for the wrong reason.
