The Malibu High School girls’ soccer team has accumulated an impressive 9-5-1 record this season. The team has scored 44 goals in its 15 games, while limiting its opponents to just 15.

The Sharks won their Frontier League opener 9-0 against Santa Clara. Malibu dominated its opponent, with Co-Captain Megan Zweig, Eva Post and Lyndsay Pieper scoring two goals apiece. After that, Malibu played against Santa Paula. Although the Sharks had possession for most of the game, they lost 2-0.

Less than a week later, Malibu faced last year’s Division Five champion and the current No. 1-ranked team, Oaks Christian. In a highly intense and dramatic game, Malibu was down by a goal at the end of the first half. Goalkeeper Breana Cowart came up big, helping to keep Malibu in the game with a number of saves. But the Sharks were outmatched, facing a team of all club players. Oaks Christian won 2-0. Despite losing, the Sharks played strong defense, and forced their opponents to shoot the majority of their shots from outside the penalty area, allowing Cowart to get a good look at every shot.

Last week, the Sharks beat St. Bernard, and dominated the game with tight defense led by Becky Pieper. She had the best game of her career, limiting St. Bernard to just five shots. Co-captain Catherine Calvert scored twice in the game and assisted on another goal, leading Malibu to a 3-0 victory.

On Friday, Malibu had a rematch with Santa Clara, once again dominating the school with a 6-0 win. Calvert scored three goals, all coming from outside the penalty area. Calvert’s second goal was a rocket into the upper-left corner of the goal, freezing the goalie.

The Sharks have an impressive record of 9-5-1. Freshman Brittany Saul leads the team in scoring with 12 goals. The strong defense has helped Cowart to record six shutouts. She has only allowed 15 goals in 15 games. Along with Saul, Malibu’s leading goal scorers are Calvert, Post and Zweig. The team has a big week ahead, with two games against Nordhoff and one against Santa Paula.
