This weekend, hundreds of surfers and spectators gathered for the 2017 MSA Classic Invitational. Considered to be one of the west coast’s premier long board competitions, the Malibu Surfing Association (MSA) has played host since the club’s inception in 1961. That was the year Miki Dora won the same event in dramatic fashion. Surfrider Beach is recognized worldwide as the birthplace of modern surf culture. As stewards of Surfrider, MSA’s top priority is taking care of the beach as well as the wave. The beach is an environmentally delicate destination in need of a management plan. This year, the “Grom Squad” was formed and organized by the title sponsor, Pinnacle Estate Properties Malibu and Paul Woodman. Over 30 kids, wearing t-shirts designed by nine-year-old club member Petra Woodman, did the beach cleanup.
