In response to Ken G’s letter about Malibu as a “sanctuary city” (“Think about it” 2/23/17)
Some of us have, in fact, opened our homes to those “illegal criminals” Ken regards as unworthy of basic human decency. After buying our home here, we were glad the seller could refer a day laborer who knew how to maintain everything. Yes, he’s not a legal citizen. And yes, he’s been arrested and deported. He’s also one of the best people we know. During our last wildfire, I was allowed to stay and assist with defending our home. Everyone else had to evacuate — but our “illegal criminal” refused to leave my side. Now, whether it’s clearing the road after a mudslide or searching for a neighbor’s child who’d gotten lost, he’s always there to help.
Last year, we discovered he’d gone homeless so we ended up inviting him to move into our unused guest room. So, thank you, Ken. We did exactly what you said: We thought about it. If we’re fortune enough to live in such a wonderful place, the least we can do is offer an otherwise empty room to a hardworking, trustworthy man who needs a roof over his head especially given the weather we’ve had this winter. So, Ken: What have you done to share something you really don’t need with someone who does? Think About It.
Please withhold our names because we don’t want the current president to deport someone who makes this an even better place to live.
