Sizzling Sharks win sixth straight game

    The Malibu boys high school varsity basketball team has now won six games straight, improving its record to 12-4, with its last win on Jan. 10, 62-56, over Carpenteria at the Malibu High School gym. In an exciting game, Malibu’s up-tempo style was too much for the visiting team. Scoring in double figures for the Sharks were Shane Mahoney with 22 Aaron Smith, 17, and Zak Katz, 11.

    Previously, Malibu was victorious in its Jan. 8 game against AGBU, 80-48. The team was led by James Ballesteros with 22, and Smith with 19.

    Malibu kicked in the New Year on Jan. 3 with a home win against Windward, 49-44.

    Over the Christmas break, the team traveled to Fresno to participate in the Central California Small School Championship Tournament. Malibu lost its opening game 89-75 to Rincon Valley Christian on Dec. 26. This put Malibu into the consolation bracket of the 16-team tournament. Malibu won its next three games to gain the first place consolation trophy, garnering its second trophy this season for the school. On Dec. 27, Malibu upset San Joaquin County of Education, 65-49. The following day Malibu played for the consolation championship, upsetting Bishop Diego of the Tri County league, 55-50. Center Thomas Oden was named most valuable player of the tournament.

    Malibu’s Jan. 7 home game against El Segundo was cancelled due to the fire and was rescheduled for Jan. 13 at the El Segundo gym. Malibu’s next game is Jan. 16 at home against Cornerstone Christian, followed by home games on Jan. 20 against Lighthouse Christian and Jan. 23 against Thatcher.

    The team has now won 12 of its last 14 games and is hopeful of obtaining an invitation to the CIF playoffs. The team has created a buzz in the community, and it is hoped the remaining games will be sold out so all can see this exciting team conclude its season.
