On a blustery day in Malibu, close friends of Johnny Strange gathered at Zuma Beach for a second paddle-out in his honor on Sunday, Oct. 18. Strange, who died at the age of 23 while BASE jumping in a wingsuit in the Swiss Alps on Oct. 1, grew up in Malibu.

The first paddle-out took place on Sunday, Oct. 2 at Zuma Beach, followed by a memorial service on Oct. 12.

“A tight group of Johnny’s closest friends from all over the world gathered yesterday at Zuma Beach to celebrate the life of Johnny Strange,” Strange’s friend Trevor Jacob said. “We shared great memories, funny stories and caught waves in honor of Johnny.

“People do not realize the magnitude of this loss. Johnny was the most courageous, nicest, most talented and humble person I have ever met. He will be missed greatly. We love you, Johnny. Thank you for showing us how to live.”
