Animal Control works on weekends.

Recently, Malibu resident Joe Feldman wrote a letter to the editor, complaining about the number of dogs running at large along the Puerco and Amarillo beach areas in Malibu.

Mr. Feldman said, despite laws forbidding dogs from being on the beaches, he frequently sees them there, set free by their owners to run at large. He also said that apparently our Department does not work on weekends and our office is closed. That part is incorrect. Our officers are on duty on a seven-day-a-week basis and our Agoura Center does handle calls on weekends.

The problem is, while it is well known that dogs are not permitted on public beaches, a number of dog owners ignore the law and not only bring their pets to the beach but let them run off leash. In response to this problem, our Department is scheduling stepped up patrolling along the Malibu beachfront and our officers will be citing dog owners for bringing their pets to the beach, which is a violation of the Airports and Harbors Code and permitting them to run at large, which violates the Animal Control Code.
