I just walked out of a Malibu High School fundraiser. I have never been so offended by anything in a school program in my life. My grandson was performing with the middle school jazz band. It’s amazing how wonderful these young people play under Mr. Bixler’s tutelage. The high school jazz band showed even greater ability. Between musical performances other students put on skits. Most of the skits were enjoyable and well done. I was looking forward to hearing the professional musicians who had volunteered their time, but, while they were setting up, a young girl put on a skit called “Catholic School Girls.” In the skit, she made fun of Catholic reverence for the name of Jesus, Catholic practice of kneeling to pray, as well as adding many inaccurate statements of my faith. I cannot fathom how any teacher would allow such an offensive performance.
One thing is for sure. The same adults who encouraged this young girl to make fun of the Catholic faith would never have allowed a performance that mocked Judaism or Islam.
