Malibu Search and Rescue (SAR) teams assisted with two separate rescue operations over the weekend, including the rescue of two hikers in Solstice Canyon and one male from Malibu Creek State Park.
Around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 13, Malibu SAR responded to a call reporting two hikers lost in Solstice Canyon due to zero visibility fog. The hikers, a 28-year-old male and a 30-year-old female, were found safely after two hours of searching, according to reports from the Malibu SAR. No injuries were reported and, with the additional guidance of National Park rangers, the duo was able to leave the park in a safely after the rescue.
Less than 24 hours later, Malibu SAR responded to reports of an injured 17-year-old male in the gorge area of Malibu Creek State Park around 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 14.
The SAR team combined efforts with Los Angeles County Fire Department officials to rescue the victim near the popular “rock pool” area, noted for its dangerous location, with freezing waters and slippery rocks.
After hiking to reach the teen, Malibu SAR was able to safely assist Los Angeles County Fire Air Operations to airlift the victim from the scene. The male victim was flown to a local hospital for further medical evaluations.
The rock pool area in Malibu Creek State Park has accounted for numerous injuries over the years, according to Malibu SAR. Of the over 75 calls Malibu SAR responded to last year, several directly involved the “rock pool.”
