Updated, 1:30 p.m.: Edison has restored power to most of the 2,400 customers who lost power Wednesday morning in central Malibu. An estimated 50 are still without power in the area near Pacific Coast Highway and John Tyler Drive.

The cause of the outage was an underground equipment failure, according to Edison spokesman Mark Olson.

“A high voltage component that connects underground wires to the underground switch went out,” Olson said.

Crews will continue working through the afternoon and are not expected to completely replace the switch until early Thursday morning.

Updated, 12:40 p.m. Central Malibu outage is affecting customers on Pacific Coast Highway between Latigo Canyon Road and Rambla Pacifico.

Correction: Susan Cox, a media relations spokesperson for Edison, now says that 2,393 customers were hit by the central Malibu outage Wednesday morning.

Updated, 12:15 p.m.: Approximately 2,700 customers in the Malibu Canyon/Civic Center area lost power at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning, the cause of which is still unknown.

Power was restored to 2,000 of those customers within the hour, but 690 remain without power, according to SCE spokesman Mark Olson.

Olson said the cause might have been underground, but he could not be certain.

“It looks likely that there may be an underground problem on the underground lines,” Olson said.

Updated, 12 p.m.: Edison does not know what caused the Malibu Canyon/Civic Center affecting 2,000 customers.

“We have troubleshooters that are working to address it right now,” said Mark Olson, a spokesman for Southern California Edison.

Updated, 11:45 a.m.: More than 2,000 Southern California Edison customers lost power Wednesday morning in the Malibu Canyon/Civic Center area, according to the City of Malibu.

It is not yet known if that outage is related to the outage on Malibu Canyon Road that occurred after a car struck a transmission pole north of Malibu Crest Road on Tuesday around 4 p.m., causing the pole to crack. The crash caused 151 customers to lose power when crews had to shut down the pole around midnight and replace it, according to Edison. Their power was fully restored Wednesday at 10 a.m.

The driver of that vehicle, 51-year-old William McIntyre of Westlake Village, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence, according to Sgt. Philip Brooks of the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station.

Updated, 11:30 a.m.: Power has been restored to 151 customers lost power early Wednesday morning when a car struck a transmission pole on Malibu Canyon Road just north of Malibu Crest Road, according to Edison spokeswoman Susan Cox.

The City of Malibu reported that the pole fell and blocked Malibu Canyon Road temporarily and also knocked out the traffic light at Civic Center Way and Malibu Canyon Road.

Most customers had their power back around 3 a.m., but 16 remained without power until 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Another outage in the Civic Center area occurred Wednesday morning. Cox was unsure whether the outages were related.

Edison crews are expected to complete repairs by 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Another outage occurred in the Civic Center area at approximately 3 a.m. Wednesday morning.

As of 10:30 a.m., Southern California Edison had not released further details such as the number of customers affected by the outages.
