Road repair is scheduled to begin this month for eight roads in Malibu and surrounding areas, after the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works last week announced the approval of a $6.7 million construction contract.

The roads scheduled for repair are Mulholland Highway, Triunfo Canyon Road, Sierra Creek Road, Malibu Canyon Road, Kanan Dume Road, Kanan Road, Las Virgenes Road and Encinal Canyon Road. Public Works officials expect the construction to take approximately five months to complete.

“These roads were definitely categorized as in need of repair,” Gary H. Boze, public information officer for the L.A. County Department of Public Works, said Monday in a phone interview. “Are they dilapidated and dangerous? I wouldn’t go that far.”

The roadway pavement resurfacing will consist of rubberized asphalt, using more than 40,900 waste tires from landfills, the county stated in a press release. The project will generate 178 jobs and is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, or Stimulus Act.

Boze said the roads are repaired according to a set schedule, but that the stimulus funding has allowed the inclusion of other roads throughout the county in need of repair. Public Works will deliver 19 transportation infrastructure projects throughout the county, using more than $46 million of stimulus funds.

“The money that is in this packet has been focused on road repair,” Boze said.

Construction work may reduce traffic to one lane for both directions controlled by flaggers during daylight working hours. Signage to inform motorists of the traffic restrictions will be posted at various intersections prior to the start of construction. Emergency access is maintained at all times during construction and no work will be performed on “red flag” fire alert days, unless authorized by the fire department.

Repair on Malibu Canyon Road will take place from Piuma Road to north of Malibu Crest Drive, while Mulholland Highway will undergo roadwork from Encinal Canyon Road to Kanan Road, and from Triunfo Creek to west of Las Virgenes Creek.

Construction on Sierra Creek Road will take place from Kanan Road to Mulholland Highway; Triunfo Canyon Road will be repaired from west of Lobo Canyon Road to Kanan Road; and Kanan Dume Road will undergo construction from Cavalleri Road to Tunnel No. 1.

On Kanan Road, repair is scheduled from Mulholland Highway to Silver Creek Road. Las Virgenes Canyon Road will undergo construction 2,140 feet north of Piuma Road, and from south of Mulholland Highway to north of Piuma Road. Encinal Canyon Road will be repaved from Lechusa Road to Mulholland Highway.
