Letter: Hypocrisy

In response to “Court decision nail in coffin for ‘The Edge’ Sweetwater Mesa development” published on March 28

I’m always amused by hypocrisy. It never ceases to amaze how some of us will say one thing and then behave in an entirely different manner when “words” and “deeds” conflict. Case in point: Mr. David Evans (you might know him as “The Edge” of the band U2). All the members of the band say they love and cherish the environment. However, when it comes to Mr. Evans and what the state, county and environmental groups call “sensitive areas,” not so much. You know the story; he wanted to make “an enclave” of large homes on the mesa. I believe one was nearly 10,000 square feet, with another nearly 9,000. That is being sensitive, you have to admit.

Then, there’s our local celeb Mr. Penn. Sean Penn extolled the virtues of Hugo Chavez, saying Mr. Chazezs’ installation as president of Venezuela was the dawn of “a new, socialist workers’ paradise.”

Easy enough to say that years ago from Malibu. Where’s Sean these days? Certainly not in Venezuela, where residents of the “socialist workers’ paradise” are eating their household pets to stay alive.

Deeds, not words, gentlemen. Deeds, not words.
