The Dolphin Awards

Karen and I would like to thank all of you who submitted nominations for this year’s Dolphin Awards (see A1 for the 2009 winners). As happens every year, we receive many more nominations than we have openings.

Several people have asked me how we decide between so many qualified candidates, so I’ll take a shot at trying to describe what is a bit of an idiosyncratic process.

First, we try to choose people from many different categories of activity. We want to recognize Malibu people involved in charity work, education, the environment, youth activities, business, the cultural world, government service, volunteer activities and more. For some it’s been a particular activity or two and for others it’s a lifetime of service.

Some years there has been a major disaster, like fire or flood, and we try to recognize those who rose to the challenge and performed extraordinarily, whether they are individuals or a government entity.

Other years, the nature of the awards is more benign and we can take the time to recognize less emergency-driven activities like the arts, and music and such. Usually, we begin by asking The Malibu Times staff who they think would be most deserving. Then we revisit some of the nominees from previous years who didn’t quite make it before but might be right for it this year.

It helps immeasurably if we have a well-written, detailed nomination letter from a few people for a candidate. Although we may know many of the people nominated, we often don’t know the scope and depth of their activity and it’s very helpful if you tell us.

Most of all we look to you, our readers to assist us in the search. You all know your community best, and Malibu has many interesting and involved people who help to give our community its character.

In recent years we’ve had to cut back a bit on the number of Dolphins we give out each year, and that is a result of a practical problem. This year’s awards will mark the 20th year we have give out the Dolphins. We now have a couple hundred former Dolphins and they’re all invited to each year’s awards event. Finding a venue that’s large enough, and that we can afford, to give our annual awards presentation is getting a little dicier. This year, the awards event will probably have 150 attendees, which rules out most of the Malibu restaurants. The awards event will take place at the spectacular oceanfront Malibu West Swim Club in Trancas to whom we are deeply grateful. Sadly, we only have room for former Dolphin winners, this year’s winner and the guests of the new winners.

So if you nominated someone who didn’t make it this year, don’t give up. There is always next year, and we all should be grateful that there are so many people in this town who give so much of themselves, their time and their money to help to keep this town a place where we all want to live.
