Malibu to get another half inch of rain … following a very wet weekend.

P C H and the transmountain roads all open and in pretty good shape … considering we got a half foot of rain.

Caltrans says it has -NOT- signed off on a plan to squeeze an extra lane on P-C-H at Cross creek.

And the bicyclists say they are checking why they have to give up a nice safe shoulder … to make way for a shopping center access lane.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

It’s the Monday edition … from Radio Malibu  …. 97 point 5 K B U.

Good morning Malibu!

——

Light rain fell overnight …. on top of a weekend deluge that saw 5 to 7 inches of rain in western Malibu … 3 inches on the eastern side of town.

All roads are open and passable.

But don’t wash the car yet.

The saturating rain will cause mudslides for the next few days … as road cuts slump down onto the pavement.

Rainfall totals range from a third of an inch at Boney Mountain … to a quarter inch at Leo Carrillo.

Point 2-0 at the Malibu Civic Center.

These are rain totals from overnight:

The epicenter for Saturday evening’s small earthquake has been pinpointed to just offshore … at Point Dume.

The magnitude 2 point 7 quake jolted Malibu at 7:35 Saturday evening.

Far too small for any damage.

But it gave a nice little punctuation point to a weekend of nature’s power.

Malibu took 5 inches of rain Friday and Saturday…. 7 inches in the mountains.

There were surprisingly few problems … to be frank.

And this morning … Piuma Road in Monte Nido … and Stunt Road up to Saddle Peak … both are open again.

All the major canyon and mountain roads are open.

The city of Los Angeles was still working last night on the sewage pumping station on PCH at Bel air bay Club.

But that problem started before the rain began to fall … and it’s not clear if it was rain related in the first place.

No sewage spill.

There has been only one lane open on PCH westbound from the trailer park just past Temescal Canyon Rd.

Three lanes into one lane … and taking Temescal up to Sunset is a good alternative.

We’re not sure if that repair work is still underway today … Mobile Unit 2 has the holiday off.

In Santa Monica … the brand new California Incline bridge and cliff stabilization program seem to have some problems.

Storm debris fell on the brand new roadway … closing the link between P C H  and downtown Santa Monica for several days.

The California Incline has been cleared of storm debris and has been reopened.

More rain is on the horizon for soggy Malibu this week.

A large storm system will hammer Northern California . but the L-A region will get just a taste of it.

One half to three-quarters of an inch of rainfall will fall in the local area between last night and Tuesday morning.

There is a 70 percent chance of rain today ….

The Malibu Planning Commission meets tomorrow.

The controversial matter of three cellular phone antennas on Point Dume … postponed again.

Residents are alarmed by plans to increase the height of existing power lines … from 36 to 43 feet … to make way for new Verizon cellphone antennas below the lines.

The cell poles are postponed another month.

The planning commission will again look at plans for dividing one lot into four … on Gallahad Road.

The approval to widen P C H at Cross Creek …. necessary to construct shopping centers at the Malibu Civic Center … that decision has -NOT- been made by Caltrans.

Shopping center developer Don Schmitz has been trying for 8 years to come up with a plan to widen the state highway at the Cross Creek Road traffic signal.

Without a new turn lane … the already bad traffic jams at that traffic light will deteriorate even further … if the La Paz shopping center is built.

That’s why the city council … in 2008 … required Schmitz to wide P C H before he can build.

Widening the road would mean taking out a landmark tree … a sycamore that has been dubbed the tree that saved Malibu.

Caltrans engineers have repeatedly rejected cramming six lanes of road into the five lane wide pavement.

Schmitz has repeatedly tried to convince the state to allow the narrow lanes…. and the elimination of the shoulders used by bikes.

And Schmitz has assured community leaders that the plan has been approved.

It hasn’t.

Quote – “Caltrans has not given final approval to this plan.”

Those are the words of Caltrans spokesman Michael Comeaux in Los Angeles … four days ago.

He tells KBUU News the decision has been kicked upstairs to Caltrans bosses in Sacramento.

The plan would apparently make traffic lanes so narrow that they woyld violate Caltrans safety standards …. and that decision has to be made at the top.

Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition president Tamika Butler tells KBUU News that they are contacting Caltrans … to find out why the shoulders that accommodate thousands of bicyclists every weekend  … are going to be removed … to make way for a shopping center access lane.

Over the weekend … it was the 75th anniversary of the forced relocation of Japanese American citizens of the United States to concentration camps.

In Malibu …. there was one family of Japanese immigrant farmers … working on the vegetable and flower gardens at what is now the Malibu Civic Center.

The Ioki Family.

75 years ago today … these immigrants and their children … American citizens born in California … and others from the Westside… were rounded up.

They were ordered to report to the corner of U-S 101 A where it crossed the Red Car streetcar tracks in west L-A.

That corner is now called Lincoln at Venice.

There … they were loaded onto buses and taken to Manzanar.

That’s a dusty … desert in theOwens Valley … surrounded by barbed wire and guard towers.

The Ioki family lost their personal property and was herded off … 75 years ago yesterday.

Presidents … including George W. Bush … apologized for the national shame.

The Malibu City Council is going to chip in on the cost of some granite obelisks … to beplaced at the corner of Lincoln at Venice … to commemorate the deportation of the undesirable aliens.

Yesterday … in Escondido … a mother of twin 18 year old girls was deported to her native Tijuana in an ICE raid.

The pattern of deportations … a hallmark of the Obama presidency … is accelerating under Trump.

——

Today is presidents day … government officces are closed.

Anti-Trump activists have seized on this federal holiday to organize “Not My Presidents Day” rallies in cities around the country.

Protest leaders say they expect thousands to take to the streets in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York and as many as two dozen other communities in the latest round of demonstrations to oppose the policies of President Donald Trump.

Plan accordingly.

In KBUU sports … the Malibu girls water polo team lost a heartbreaker Saturday,

Santa Ana Valley High beat them by just one measly point … 9 to 8.

The loss ends the Sharks C-I-F playoffs at the quarterfinals.

The boys soccer team also made it to the bracket of 8 in the C I F finals.

They were eliminated by Brentwood last Thursday … another one point game … 2 to 1.

Congratulations are in store for the ladies and gentlemen … water polo and soccer … for making it to the final bracket of eight teams.

Here’s the KBUU PCH gas survey.

The cheapest gasoline on PCH yesterday was at the Arco stations at both Point Dume and Topanga Cyn.

$2.89 a gallon …. … some thirty cents cheaper than other stations.
