In reference to Hans Laetz’ article in the Times, I must protest. The concept of a traffic signal at the Corral Canyon/PCH intersection is abhorrent to me for a number of qualified reasons. Traffic is already fitful on PCH and adding yet another light would make it worse and more frustrating. I’m sure many still find it annoying to stop at the shiny new Zumirez intersection.
Annoyance aside, the safety issue is apparently the main consideration voiced by the dratted signal’s supporters. Although there are accidents at that location, how many have I counted at the intersection of well-signalled John Tyler? How many hours have I spent trapped on one side or another of that intersection waiting for emergency personnel to clear a route? PCH is dangerous. That’s it. People do stupid, irrational risky things in cars. We are technically a “college town.” But it must be made clear that installing yet another tortuous wait time on PCH will do nothing to encourage people to be more patient, more careful or more grateful to our city planners. It will make commutes worse, and incite those who are poor drivers to take more risks, not fewer.
I strongly object to the idea of a signal at the bottom of Corral for any reason. The tiny cluster of beachfront homes which will be disturbed by its installation and operation are one thing, but the hundreds of intelligent Corral Canyon residents who drive the canyon and would be extruded through the signal four, six or even eight times a day cannot logically desire the further delays, risks and dangers such a signal would create.
