The Malibu High School girls varsity basketball team last week played Frontier League rivals Bishop Diego and Santa Paula.

The Sharks now qualify for the Southern Section of the post-season CIF playoffs, and will face Costa Mesa High School in Orange County this week Thursday at 7 p.m.

At Santa Barbara against Bishop Diego, the Sharks were defeated 36-20. Malibu was held to a season low of six points in the first half, while co-captain Hannah Robinson led the cold-shooting Sharks with eight points.

In Malibu’s final game of the regular season, which took place on Seniors’ Night at their home court, the Sharks defeated Santa Paula 43-39. Graduating senior co-captain Evelyn Quartz and forward Athena Valesquez were honored by their teammates, families and friends in ceremonies before the game. In the game, All-League guard Danielle Bush led Malibu with 14 points, while guard Marie Vazelakis scored 13 points and had 11 rebounds. Center Sierra Zontelli had 13 rebounds. In the second period, the Sharks’ co-captain Hannah Robinson collided with another player and suffered a bloody nose and minor back and neck pain. She was airlifted to the UCLA Trama Unit and all test results were negative. The Sharks finished the season with a 12-12 overall record, and a 5-5 league record.
