The Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts at Pepperdine University in Malibu will kick off its 2015-16 concert season with a performance by Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives on Thursday, Sept. 17 at Smothers Theatre.

Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives have touched thousands with their “signature blend of blues, gospel and rock ‘n’ roll,” according to Pepperdine. Their talents have helped land them a total of five Grammys.

“From the Superlatives’ first rehearsal, I knew this was the band of a lifetime,” Stuart said in a release by Pepperdine. “I knew this was my Buckaroos, my Strangers, my Texas Troubadours — my legacy band. Kenny Vaughan, Harry Stinson and Paul Martin are not only musical geniuses, but statesmen.”

Over 40 years, the singer has been expanding his legacy, from releasing his latest double-disc album “Saturday Night & Sunday Morning,” to playing multiple instruments, to pursuing his non-musical talents of photography and history.

Stuart started following his passion for music at the age of 13 when he traveled cross-country as a mandolinist with Lester Flatt’s road bands. In his 20s, Stuart toured with the world-renowned Johnny Cash and has played with many other notable artists. After spending time as a soloist, he decided he wanted to continue his journey with some company and so he recruited his fellow bandmates, according to Pepperdine.

The event will take place at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17 at Pepperdine’s Smothers Theatre, which is located at 24255 Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Tickets will be $25 for adults and $10 for full-time Pepperdine students. They can be purchased online or via phone by calling 310.506.4522. For additional information, visit Marty’s website.
