I was driving through Malibu from my home in northern California when I picked up The Malibu Times. I was appalled by an article on the first page regarding the arrest of Mel Gibson for drunken driving. Apparently it’s true that Mr. Gibson owns Malibu as he has personally stated. He certainly has the power to harass a policeman for doing his duty. How many other drivers get away with a slap on the hands while drunk? Happily, not many.

How many drunk drivers can make a public service movie for Sheriff Baca and, in return, virtually receive a key to the city? How many celebrities are charged with drunk or drug impeded driving and other illegal activities which, when appearing in newspapers, television or other media, cause the officer in charge to be suspected of leaking this information?

My first thought on this unfortunate situation makes me wonder that, if Mel Gibson really does own Malibu, perhaps the local citizens would like to send him their property tax statements.
