Actress Betty White, Smokey the Bear and the California Wildland Fire Coordinating Group have teamed up to create a 60-second public service announcement to help decrease wildfires, with a dash of humor.
In the video, “Honorary Forest Ranger” White discusses little-known ways everyday activities like driving or mowing your lawn can spark a wildfire.
The video is part of the “One Less Spark, One Less Wildfire” campaign to education Californians about how to prevent wildfires sparked inadvertently around homes and vehicles.
The California Wildland Fire Coordinating Group is a fire management partnership between several state and federal agencies.
The video comes in the midst of Malibu’s fire season.
Two small brush fires broke out earlier this month, one near Las Virgenes Road and a second on Corral Canyon Road. The Las Virgenes fire was caused when a truck overturned and sparked nearby grass. The Corral Canyon fire was believed to be caused by a cigarette flicked by a passing motorist.
The National Weather Service also released a wind advisory for the first Santa Ana Winds last week, with winds exceeding 45 MPH hitting Malibu Friday, creating an increased fire risk.
