Looking for trouble

Malibu is a great place to live, but living here is not without problems. I shall never forget the couple who burned to death in their car trying to escape fire in the canyon. I’ve seen the mud slides that usually follow the fire with the tremendous loss of life and property. Therefore I am opposed to overnight camping in the mountains which I understand would not be patrolled by rangers. Overnight campers cannot be relied on not to light a fire if the weather turns cold. They could even light a fire just for the fun of sitting around it and talking. We all know too well how easily a spark, a cigarette or even a backfire can start a fire that spreads quickly, endangering our firefighters as well as our lives and property.

We have to put up with the fires that “happen,” but we don’t have to create more opportunities for fires. Overnight camping would do just that.
