The number of traffic tickets written in Malibu …. is up 33 percent this year.

It’s 70 degrees this morning here at Trancas … that’s 20 degrees below than two days ago.

Yes.  Tuesday was the hottest day in recorded history in Malibu.

The state prosecutors drop their order for KBUU radio to produce a reporters files.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

It’s the   ((((  Thursday  ))) edition of the news … from Radio Malibu  …. 97 point 5 K B U.

Good morning Westward Beach Road.

It’s Official: Tuesday Was Officially Freakin’ Hot

At KBUU’s request … the National Weather Service has looked at some old weather data … and determined that two days ago was indeed the hottest day and the hottest night in recorded history.

But … those records only go back to 19-99.

The only official National Weather Service thermometer on the beach in Malibu is at Leo Carrillo Beach.

There are some other stations that meet government standards and report to the Oxnard weather office … but for these purposes the one at Leo Carrillo is the official reporting station.

And two days ago … October 24th 20-17 … the high there was 1-0-3.

That was two degrees hotter than the previous

record high … 1-0-1 … set on Sept. 26, 2016.

It was also the hottest night on record by a longshot … 11 degrees …. as the low two mornings ago was 90.

That broke the record set in 20-0-8 … of 79 degrees.

The massive heat wave is over … but a smaller Santa Ana is setting up for tomorrow.

There will be no hot winds of note today.

But by tomorrow morning we will see some 15 to 25 mile per hour gusts coming out of the canyons.

Saturday will be an even stronger Santa Ana … but nothing like we saw earlier this week.

Daytime temperatures will be 10 to 15 degrees above normal the next three days.

Malibu schools are back on normal schedules today.

Chain Store Battle Resumes At City Hall

Malibu residents concerned about the local retail mix passed a referendum at the polls … in what seems like an eternity ago.

Measure R was intended to prevent out of town chain stores from gobbling up all the space at shopping centers.

Opponents said it was unconstitutional … and they were right.

But the city council has asked the city attorney to come up with a chain store ban that would pass the limits set down by the state Court of Appeal  … when it knocked down Measure R.

That proposed chain store restriction goes before the Planning Commission for a first look on Monday.

The proposed ban would limit new, enlarged or relocated chain stores to the size of a small house … 25 hundred square feet.

If a chain store can claim that 50 percent of the menu, goods and services

are unique to Malibu … they get to be a little bit bigger.

It only affects shopping centers … and there are other details.

The proposed chain store restrictions come as retail stores everywhere … are fighting for survival in a mail order world.

Vacancies are spotted … in Malibu shopping centers … the first time since they were built.

State AG Drops Demand To See KBUU Reporter’s E-mails

The State of California Attorney General’s office has dropped a subpoena it had issued for a reporter’s records on traffic crashes on Pacific Coast Highway.

The state attorneys had asked a reporter for KBUU radio to provide all of his records … photos … emails and other data reaching back to the year 2005 … related to P C H safety.

The state ordered the reporter to produce the records … so it could review them in connection with a trial coming up next month.

The state is being used for wrongful death … over a the death of a motorcycle rider on PCH at Geoffrey’s restaurant.

The reporter had written about dangerous conditions created by the yellow paddles in the center of the road.

The motorcyclist was killed when a driver was confused by the lack of signage … at the Geoffrey’s parking lot … and turned the wrong way … into the oncoming traffic … including the motorcyclist.

The state ordered the journalist to hand over his records despite a shield law that protects reporters.

The reporter refused to hand them over … and had to spend 600 dollars in court costs to fight the order.

The state has now dropped the subpoena.

But KBUU was not able to recover the 600 dollars it spent … on legal fees to fight the subpoena.

Ticket Writing Jumps 33% This Year

The number of traffic tickets being issued in Malibu is increasing.

The L A County sheriff’s department says it has issued more than 20 thousand traffic tickets so far this year.

That’s a 33 percent increase over last year.

The crash rates appear to be about the same.

But many motorists are still complaining about aggressive or speeding traffic on the coast highway.

By the end of the month of September … the sheriff’s deputies had written 20 thousand 473 tickets this year.

48-hundred of those were for hazardous driving.

September alone saw 572 tickets … with 348 of those for hazardous driving.

Corp Jets Tell S-M Where To Put Their Ban

In news from down the coast … the total number of flights at Santa Monica airport has dropped dramatically in the past year… but jet traffic is at a ten-year high.

That’s according to data obtained by the Santa Monica Lookout newspaper.

Jet operations at Santa Monica Airport are up nine percent in September…  over the same month last year.

And there were numerous jet violations of the city’s noise limits …which also reached a five-year high,.

It’s almost as if the business jet pilots are giving a final “up yours” to the city … as work has begin to chop short the runway by 15 hundred feet …

That means most of the business jets now flying in and out of Santa Monica will have to go elsewhere.
