Good morning Malibu!
Stolen Car Hits, Kills Pedestrian At Geoffrey’s
P C H remains closed east of Paradise Cove … west of Latigo Beach … after a fatal crash this morning.
A pedestrian walking along the highway was struck and killed by a man described as a car thief by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies.
The sheriff’s office reports that patrol deputies spotted a stolen car on Pacific Coast Highway this morning at about 745.
After following it for a few minutes … the driver apparently spotted the squad car … and deputies see the man drove off in an erratic manner.
Deputies say they broke off any pursuit because of the erratic driving.
Moments later they came upon a fiery crash on PCH new Geoffrey’s restaurant … just east of the signal at Paradise Cove.
They pulled the driver of the stolen car out of the wreckage … as it and at least two other vehicles we’re fully engulfed in flames.
It’s not clear where the pedestrian was … but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The injured driver of the stolen car was taken by ambulance to the helicopter landing zone at Pepperdine University and transferred it into a chopper.
Because of the pedestrian fatality … homicide investigators we’ll have Pacific Coast Highway closed all day for accident reconstruction.
Worker Hit By Other Car At MHS
At almost the exact same time as this was happening …. A construction worker was apparently hit by a vehicle at or near Malibu high school.
No details on this yet … except the school district says it was a construction worker who was injured,
This happened in the midst of the heavy morning drop off traffic on Morning view Drive … but given the confusion on Pacific Coast Highway … sheriffs deputies don’t have any information for us on this crash.
The victim was taken by ambulance to the helicopter landing zone at the Zuma Beach lifeguard headquarters.
The crash on PCH happened about four minutes after the crash at Malibu high school … but Sheriff’s deputies tell us at this time they do not believe the two crashes were related.
The school is having normal operations … and counselors are there if any kids want to talk about either of the crashes this morning before school
PCH To Be Closed All Day
KBU Radio is monitoring the PCH closure and we will let you know when traffic reopens.
Latigo Canyon Road is open and available as a detour … but is extremely twisty.
We recommend using Kanan-Dume Road … the 101 Freeway and Malibu Canyon as a detour.
We will have frequent updates on FM 99.1 and radiomalibu.net

Malibu Beach Inn Thinking About Stacking Cars
Owners of the Malibu Beach Inn … are trying to comply with city parking regulations and at the same time install an oceanfront swimming pool.
They have purchased a lot down P C H …. the old Hertz rent a car lot.
The idea has been to have parking valets store vehicles off the site .. for guests.
That has run into trouble at City Hall … all sorts of legal and traffic congestion questions.
The owners of the Malibu Inn are now proposing to use parking lifts … to double stack cars … at the parking lot.
This would enable them to open the restaurant at the Malibu Beach Inn .. to the general public.
Right now … it’s for guests only.
How would this affect traffic … with dozens of cars every day being shuffled back and forth the highway???
It would add dozens of pedestrian crossings as well … as the valets cross back and forth to retrieve cars.
The matter was on the agenda for next Monday … but will be delayed at the owners’ request.
Coastal Doesn’t Like City Parking Plan
And at the same patch of hard-fought pavement on Pacific Coast Highway … the state Coastal Commission has scheduled a hearing on the city’s proposal to regulate parking on PCH at the pier.
The city proposes to limit parking between the hours of 2 and 5 in the morning …. to one half hour duration …. at the Malibu Pier.
The idea is to get rid of parking hogs who have permanently stationed their vehicles on the highway there …. particularly … one businessman who has converted about 8 primo parking spaces to a permanent storage area and advertisement for his business.
Two coastal commissioners … Susan Bochco and Mark Vargas … complain that the 30 minute limit does not provide adequate time for members of the public to use the beach at 2 o’clock in the morning.
Commission staff agrees … and waxes that the 30 minutes is not enough time … quotw …
“to access the beach, enjoy a moonlight walk along the sand, observe a grunion run, or go
swimming or surfing.”
Of course … at 2 in the morning ….. the beach is closed … and the pier is locked.
The matter goes before the CoastalCommission in two weeks … in Dana Point.
Coastal Doesn’t Like County Parking Plan Either
Coastal Commissioners Susan Bochco and Mark Vargas are also opposed to the county’s attempts to reinstall overnight no parking signs along P C H east of Topanga Beach.
The area has become a campground for a ramshackle collection of RVs and campers.
The coastal staff has written a report that … incredibly .. does nto address the issue of the side of PCH becoming a semipermanent housing site.
Nothing about the safety of people squatting in shelters adjacent to a 50 mile per hour roadway travelled by 60 thousand cars per day.
Rather … it deals with the campground as if it is a beach access site.
Costal staff suggests that the camping vehicles on the road be directed to nearby county parking lots … without addressing the fact that turning those lots into semi-permanent encampments would deprive beachgoers parking lots that are heavily used by day visiotrs.
That matter also goes before the commission next month.

Metro Turnaround: More Buses For Malibu
Less than a half year after cutting some of the bus service to Malibu …. Metro has determined that ridership is up and more buses have to be run.
In addition … the Metro bus service on line 534 will now connect directly to the Metro Expo line trains in Santa Monica.
Incredibly … when the rail service began … buses from Malibu did not stop at the Expo station …. but rather wound around downtown Santa Monica before finally stopping a block away from the trains.
Now …. the 34 daily buses are to head directly from PCH to 5th at Colorado … right near the Expo station.
In addition … three additional bus trips day have been added … and service will now be every 15 minutes into Santa Monica in the afternoons.
And all bus service will start at Trancas …. instead of some buses originating at the Malibu Civic Center.
The added bus service will start December 10th.
Two years ago …a Metro plan for th efuture proposed eliminating bus service to Malibu … as being outside the Metro core service area.
Officials at the transit agency now say that was a mistake.
SM Airport Losing Flights
The Santa Monica Lookout newspaper reports that the number of aircraft flying in and out of Santa Monica Airport is going down down down.
And that includes jet traffic.
But as of a month ago … 174 aircraft have caused noise violations …
That’s a record.
Ten of them have been cited … that’s a two thousand dollar fine …. but most of the violators got warning … for their first offense.
Nearly all of the noise violations were jets.
The city will put an end to that this month.
Santa Monica Airport will close for 10 days … while new safety areas acre created at each end of the runway.
That will shrink the runway from 5 thousand feet … to 35 hundred feet …. and that will mean an end to most jet operations.
Charter jets represent about 20 percent of total flight activity at th eairport … and that is expected to end.
Helicopter flights represent about four percent of flight operations there.
This story is based on reporting in the Santa Monica Outlook newspaper.
Santa Monica Airport is the closest airfield to Malibu
