Malibu residents Elaine Himelfarb and her daughter, Maria, will travel to Uganda early November as representatives for The Greater Contribution, a local nonprofit. Himelfarb is a current board member while her daughter is a volunteer.
The nonprofit provides microloans, literacy classes and business training to impoverished Ugandan women in rural areas. Microloans allow the women—many who were widowed by the civil war—to start their own businesses. Since 2006, the nonprofit has made more than 13,500 loans with a 98 percent payment rate.
Donations will be accepted through greatercontribution.org.
