The following was addressed to Caltrans:

I just wanted to thank you for stripping the smooth paving off PCH these past two weeks. What a wonderful trip down memory lane to experience PCH like it must have been in the old days when you could pile the family into a Model T and enjoy a long rickety trip to the beach across gravel and bituminous coal tar.

The City of Los Angeles is such a tease that way. They repave their roads so quickly you hardly have time to enjoy the pleasure of driving behind a truck as it kicks a cloud of loose asphalt rock all over your car. I’ve heard there’s nothing better for a car’s paint job. I also know I’m not alone in expressing my enthusiasm. Just yesterday I saw a cyclist express his joy by doing an impromptu forward flip with his bike, followed by a celebratory face-slide. Even children appreciate your consideration. Some friends of mine were driving north right after they had put their child to sleep in the back seat, but, gosh-golly, if the little tyke refused to keep down, screaming and hollering with joy at the bone-jarring thrill of driving across an honest-to-goodness old-fashioned ramshackle road.

I think I speak for all of Malibu when I say this is the greatest gift you’ve given our community since your rocket scientist workers destroyed those homes on Sierks Road 10 years ago.

So the next time I hear someone declare that Caltrans is run by a bunch of idiots and morons, I’m just going to remind them of this very special moment in time.
