Another Santa Ana is brewing here in Malibu … as the death toll hits 31 in northern California.

Trial is set for Monday … over the death of a Malibu motorcyclist.

Malibu High’s swimming pool needs a special truck to better clean the water.

And an important decision … or non-decision … on beach access from the U-S Supreme  Court.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

It’s the   ((((  Friday  ))) edition of the news … from Radio Malibu  …. 97 point 5 K B U.

Good morning Phillip Avenue!

Santa Ana Winds May Hit (Parts Of) The Bu

Another Santa Ana is brewing … with the dry winds and dry landscape combining to give us a Red Flag Warning tonight through Saturday morning across the Santa Monica Mountains…

There will be a Sundowner tonight up the coast … a little stronger than last night.

Saturday will see Santa Ana gusts … in the 40 mile per hour range.

Winds That Toppled Poles Were Not That Strong

The death toll up north is now 31 … from the fires ringing Napa, Sonoma, Santa Rosa and Calistoga.

It’s now the deadliest fire in California history … surpassing the 1933 Griffith park fire in Los Angeles.

400 people are still missing …. but about 600 people identified as missing have been located.

The power company up there … P G and E … blames what they called hurricane force winds for knocking over dozens of its poles … casing many of the fires.

P G and E claimed 75 mile an hour winds.

Reporters for the San Jose Mercury pulled the records for weather stations in north Santa Rosa … and found peak wind gusts of 41 miles per hour.

California utility regulators have told P G and E to preserve any evidence … including all broken power poles and electrical conductors.

That’s standard procedure.

On the cold beaches of the Sonoma and Mendocino coast … hundreds of undocumented workers … and their children … are camping on beaches with the clothes that they escaped the fire in.

They’re afraid of the evacuation centers … worried that ICE agents will sweep them.

The wine grape harvest was in progress … and there were tens of thousands of farm workers working the fields.

Malibu’s Public Pool Needs Extra Filtration

Malibu High school’s swimming pool has the same headache that many pools and hot tubs face.

Continued use of chlorine causes an increase in total dissolved solids.

Not a hygiene or water safety issue … say experts … it’s a chemical reaction that causes a buildup.

They buildup of salts can cause a range of irritants to some users of the pool

They also impact the ability to purify the pool … requiring more chlorine.

Since this big pool can’t be drained and the water replaced … school district officials will bring in a special truck is being brought in.

The truck carries a portable reverse osmosis system.

The truck will be tested for a few days … then may be left running at the school for two weeks.

Crash Causes Afternoon Power Outage

About 14-hundred Malibu residences and businesses lost power yesterday afternoon.

A vehicle hit a power pole about a mile and a half up Encinal Canyon Road.

One person was hospitalized from the crash … which was at 10 before 4.

The pole problem took out power in a hopscotch pattern across western Malibu …

Trial Over Malibu Motorcyclist Death Monday

Trial is set to begin Monday in a negligence lawsuit against Caltrans and Geoffrey’s restaurant … over the death of a Malibu motorcyclist.

Joseph Annocki was killed in March of 2011 when his motorcycle struck a rental car that was driven by a tourist from Oklahoma … exiting Geoffrey’a parking lot.

The tourist had driven out of the restaurant’s exit … and drove onto P C H on the wrong side of the orange paddle center dividers.

There were no signs put up by Caltrans or Geoffreys warning motorists not to do that.

This case has already gone to the state Supreme Court … as Geoffrey’s argued that it does not have any legal obligation to warn people about hazards off of its property.

Oh yes you do … was the ruling from the Supreme Court.

In a sidelight … the State of California has ordered a Malibu journalist to turn over all of his files dating back to 2005.

The state says its entitled to review the reporter’s files … because the journalist has been called as an expert witness in the case.

The reporter says being added against his will as a witness does not give Caltrans a license to fish through his unpublished notes and emails

The journalist … now reporting news at KBUU … had written about the dangers of the center paddles before the crash occurred.

The journalist says the California journalists shield law protects his files against government review.

A separate court hearing is set for next week on that matter.

Racist Stickers At Cal State Channel Islands

Racist stickers and banners have appeared at Cal State Channel Islands … the state university just up the coast from Malibu.

A white supremecist group called “Identity Evropa” is identified on the stickers as their source.

The Ventura County Star reports that C-S-U  Channel Islands officials found stickers and fliers for the white nationalist group were found posted on the Camarillo campus.

The racist flyers and stickers were removed by police.

Identity Evropa is focused on the preservation of “white American identity” and promoting white European culture … according to the Anti-Defamation League.

SCOTUS Rejects Beach Access Case, For Now

The United States Supreme Court has denied a request to review a case from North Carolina about that could have affected the public’s access to beaches here in California.

A North Carolina town called Emerald Isle has an easement across private property to access a beach … for its vehicles and for the public.

But the Pacific Legal Foundation … a California property rights group … says the easement was a taking .. without compnesation.

It lost in lower court … then appealed that the U S Supreme Court.

But the U-S Supreme Court turned down a chance to review the lower court case … so the public beach  access continues in North Carolina.

Although beach access advocates on both coasts are happy with the North Carolina decision … it could be that the U -S Supreme Court’s conservatives are simply waiting for a case that presents a clearer issue … such as the California Coastal Commission’s battle to keep open Martin’s Beach  … in northern California.
