Malibu Middle School students collected more than 2,200 gently used books to donate to Harrington Elementary School in Oxnard, which they dropped off at the school last Thursday.

When delivering the books, students took a tour of the school, presented books to classes and read with students. Each Harrington student will take one book home and the rest will be donated to classroom libraries.

The donation effort was part of a bar mitzvah project for Malibu student Lucas Gorak. Gorak, an associate student body member at Malibu Middle School, and his classmates collected books from MHS and Juan Cabrillo Elementary School.

The project took place in conjunction with nonprofit organization Bookends, which made sure the donated books met certain criteria.
