SM Domination of Malibu ‘Is Not A Civil Rights Issue’
The apparent decision by Santa Monica school board members to reverse course …. and not agree to a separate Malibu school district … was NOT on the agenda last night.
The school board had one of its regular meeting in Malibu … as it does every two months or so.
A few public speakers … blasted the board and conveyed Malibu outrage.
Maria Leon Vazquez is a longtime Santa Monica school board member … and she particularly ticked off some people in Malibu during the board meeting.
She said the fact that Malibu is dominated by Santa Monica interests … who have 86 percent of the population … is not a civil rights issue.
We asked her last night to expland on that.
MARIA LEON VASQUEZ :35 QQQ set up for them.
“No, I think that when you coin the phrase of ‘it’s a civil rights issue’ you talk about looking at all the legislation and all of the case law that was established to get people, diverse people … people of color, the same rights in terms of (that) I would consider of an even playing field.
“So it’s not coined … based on … for me it’s not based upon what are the diffe groups that fall within the the civil rights movement, that all that legislation was set up for them.” [END QUOTE]
The school board member said it Is possible for Malibu to elect more board members to the seven member Santa Monica school board … despite the fact Malibu makes up just 16 percent of the voters.
The matter returns to the School board agenda on November 16th … at a meeting scheduled for Santa Monica.
Monday’s meeting was held in the tiny school board headquarters in Santa Monica …. where the board room and the overflow room were both crammed capacity.
Malibu activists are asking that the next meeting be moved Malibu City Hall … which is much larger and closer for the vast majority of people who can be expected to attend.
City Making A Mint On B and B Tax
The City of Malibu is getting rich from overnight rentals.
Air B and B … VRBO … and the others are providing a financial windfall to the city treasury.
A budget report obtained by KBUU News shows that anticipated payments … in the form of the Transient Occupancy Tax —skyrocketed to double what was anticipated.
Private overnight rentals came in at $1.81 million so far this year … doubling the original budget amount of $900,000.
The tax on overnight rentals was originally fought by some of the overnight rental companies … but the major ones have agreed to collect taxes for cities … perhaps realizing that the tax revenues make their operations attractive.
Malibu Speakers Series A Hit With Public
The Malibu Speakers Series appears to be a gigantic hit with the public.
According to statistics gathered by the city … an average of 160 people attend each event.
The lowest attended event was in mid-May, with a turnout of 55 people.
The 2017 Speaker Series was budgeted at $100,000.
Plans are underway for the next slate of speakers.

Malibu Land Empire Up For Sale: 70 ac $150 mil
The Malibu Bay Company is up for sale …
At 150 million dollars … the properties assembled by billionaire Jerry Perenchio in Malibu … are on the market following his death in May.
The trade publications are reporting today that eight pieces of land in Malibu … totaling 70 acres … have been put on the market.
Perenchio had owned the land for three decades.
The land is listed for sale includes a lot that sits adjacent to Malibu Colony.
It also includes the large vacant lot just west of the old Malibu Civic Center … where the chili cookoff has been held lately … and where a large office building has been proposed.
City Hall is analyzing that application now.
Also on the list … a vacant lot at Broad Beach across the street from shopping center … zoned for four big beach houses.
The Realtors hyping the sale claim that whomever buys this package of land is … quoting now … going to become the most important land owner in all of Malibu.
“They will have the opportunity to impact the look and feel of Malibu forever,” says the Realtor . Mark Sullican.
The listing makes no mention of the private 9-hole golf course that Perenchio built next to the Malibu Lagoon.
The Coastal Commission extracted a promise that the land would be added to the lagoon state park after the death of Perenchio and his wife.
The brokers hope to get more than $150 million.
