Malibu Lures Mountain Lion Back Across 101 Freeway
A Malibu mountain lion is in the news … for making a second dash across the 1-0-1 Freeway and living through it.
P-55 was last in the news when he made it across the 1-0-1 … out of the Santa Monica Mountains and heading north in search of female mountain lions and a comfy section of mountain habitat to call his own.
But … he’s back.
P-55 thus becomes the first mountain lion to successfully cross the 1-0-1 freeway twice … in the 15 years the National Park Service has been tracking lions in the area.
There have been only four documented cases of a lion successfully crossing the freeway a single time.
And here’s the best part …
P-55 made his daring crossing right next to the big shopping mall in Thousand Oaks … just west of the Route 23 interchange.
Ranger Kate Kuykendall says P-55 is “now back to roaming the western end of the Santa Monica Mountains … likely looking to avoid other males so that he can one day establish his own territory.”
Malibu Examines Adding Impact Fee to Construction Costs
Malibu may start charging impact fees for new development …. including houses.
Mayor Skylar Peak is asking the city council to study the matter.
The traffic mitigation fee would be charged to new development …. to help fund transportation improvements to roads and sidewalks that may be impacted by additional traffic from new development projects.
The proposal comes as Malibu is looking at several new commercial projects … in the pipeline for the Civic Center area.
It’s also lining up funding to rebuild Civic Center Way.
The city points out that Santa Monica charges 78 hundred dollars per residential unit for new construction.
Santa Monica also charges 30 dollars per square foot for offices and retail.
Impact fees in Malibu … the idea goes before the city council Monday.
Judge Throws Out His Own Order Blocking Runway Reduction
Santa Monica has just won a green light to demolish each end of the runway at Santa Monica Airport.
A federal judge has reversed himself … and dropped a temporary restraining order that had blocked the project.
Aviation interests have tried over and over again to win a court order to block the shortening of the runway … which will block most business jets from landing or taking off there.
They won a temporary block by arguing that the state’s open meetings law .. of all things … had bene violated.
That was nonsense.
The judge reversed the order … Santa Monica says it will begin the deconstruction very soon.

Petty’s daughter posted pictures from that too … of the t-shirts given away to attendees.
The graphic featured a young Tom playing the guitar … and the phrase “nil desperandum,” which is Latin for “do not despair.”
