Mark Herron, aged 86, died on Aug. 30 of bone cancer.

He was born on Dec. 29, 1931, in Santa Monica. Mark later attended Cate High School in Carpinteria. After Cate, he went to the University of Hawaii.

When he got home one summer after sailing from the university, he was drafted to the army. He served for two years in France and Germany as a cook.

Back home in Santa Monica, he met Meredith, his wife-to-be. They were married on Jan. 21, 1956. Mark went to USC and majored in geography. When he graduated, he went to work for his father-in-law as a cartographer.

Mark and Meredith had three children—the late Cynthia, who died at 46; Mike; and Rick and his wife, Julie.

Mark and Meredith moved to Malibu in January 1969. He became active in Malibu Little League and was president from 1972-74. He was also active in the Malibu Lions Club and served as president from 1982-83. He had his own business—Heron Maps—and worked from home.

He is survived by his wife, three children, four grandkids—Casey, Jessica, Nick and Miles—and one great-granddaughter, Emma.

According to his family, he will have his ashes spread in Hawaii.
