Malibu skateboarder, 12, lands first-ever 1080
Twelve-year-old Malibu native Tom Schaar landed a 1080, a three-rotation aerial move Monday, making him the first-ever skateboarder to complete the trick. The sixth-grader landed the move after just a handful of attempts while skateboarding at the MegaRamp at Woodward West action sports camp in Tehachapi. Schaar, who is sponsored by Red Bull, grew up skating at Malibu?s own Papa Jack?s Skate Park.
Two small earthquakes shake Malibu
Two small earthquakes hit Malibu last weekend approximately six hours apart. A magnitude 3.0 earthquake shook Malibu Friday evening at 7:15 p.m., followed by a second 3.0 earthquake at 2:53 a.m. Saturday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Fifty-four people reported feeling the first earthquake from its epicenter, just three miles outside of Malibu. The second earthquake occurred approximately 32 miles southwest of Malibu.
Geophysicist Shengzao Chen said earthquakes of this magnitude are typically shallow in intensity and generally do not cause major damage. There have been no reported injuries or damages in Malibu as a result of the earthquakes.
One injured in motorcycle accident
A 73-year-old motorcyclist was injured in an accident with one other vehicle at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Rambla Pacifico around 6 p.m. last Monday, Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff?s Station traffic Sgt. Philip Brooks said. The driver of a 2002 Mercedes-Benz was attempting to turn left from westbound Pacific Coast Highway into the Union 76 gas station at the intersection when she struck the motorcyclist driving in the number one lane of eastbound Pacific Coast Highway. The motorcyclist, a Los Angeles resident, was transported to UCLA to be treated for leg injuries. The 50-year-old driver had no injuries.
Basketball coach Riley sued over basement damage
Miami Heat president Pat Riley is reportedly being sued for causing damage to his neighbor?s basement in Malibu. According to documents obtained by TMZ, Riley and his wife, Christine, are being sued for $551,000 stemming from a 2009 remodel of their home. The documents say after the couple updated their home?s landscaping, terracing and irrigation system, a leakage problem soon became apparent that caused their neighbor?s basement to flood. Riley?s neighbors are reportedly claiming their own drainage system was damaged as a result of his renovations and are now seeking compensation.
Riley is the current president and former coach of the Miami Heat. He won four NBA championships as the coach of the Los Angeles Lakers during the 1980s and a fifth as coach of the Heat in 2006.
Youth commission accepting applications
The City of Malibu is now accepting applications for appointments to the Harry Barovsky Memorial Youth Commission. Students who will be in grades seven through 12 during the 2012-2013 school year and live or go to school in Malibu are eligible to apply.
