Get bikes off PCH

Regarding Olivia Damavandi’s report on last week’s City Council discussion of bicycle safety on PCH, there is no such thing. Our deepest sympathies go out to the Armas family, but having the right to do something doesn’t make it safe to do so. Back before I moved to Malibu, I had to give up cycling after my third serious accident. Even so, I would never dream of driving on such a dangerous roadway.

L.A. County has well over 100 miles of safe bike paths, including dozens of miles right along the shore, starting at Temescal Canyon. PCH simply is not and never will be a safe place to ride.

Every day, we all see drivers doing incredibly stupid things out there. I’ve personally seen someone die moments after being thrown through the window of a car. If being surrounded by tons of steel and the latest in automotive safety can’t ensure your survival, what possible chance do you have when confronted with the inevitable accident on a bicycle?

There’s a reason why we don’t let people ride bicycles on our freeways, so isn’t it time we let common sense prevail here are well?
