A 54-year resident of Point Dume, Esther Catherine Lowry died on Sunday. She was 88.

Lowry was born in Winnipeg, Canada on March 31, 1920 as the youngest of three children. Single and enamored with a co-worker who had moved to Santa Monica, she decided to move to California. This led to a 37-year marriage to Harry Lowry. They purchased land and built their dream home in Point Dume.

Lowry was a founding member of the Malibu Methodist Church and taught Sunday school. Initially, church services were held in the Lowry home. She was an active member of the Malibu Garden Club and a former president.

Lowry was a foster parent and worked with the youth both in this country and abroad.

She was preceded in death by her husband and son, Gilbert. Lowry is survived by a large family and many friends.

A memorial service and celebration of Lowry’s life will take place at the Malibu United Methodist Church this week on Thursday at 2 p.m.. A reception will follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Humane Society of the U.S.
