Stan Kroenke buys another pro sports team

Malibu’s Stan Kroenke has just agreed to pay the largest sum ever to acquire a Major League Baseball team. The billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Rams football team, the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, the Colorado Rapids of the MLS, and the Arsenal soccer team of the English Premier League, adds to his sports portfolio with the record-breaking $4-billion valuation of the beleaguered Los Angeles Angels baseball team that plays 30 miles south in Anaheim. Kroenke’s purchase of the Angels, who have gone nearly 17 years without winning a postseason game, just edges out last month’s purchase high of $3.9 billion for the sale of the San Diego Padres. The Angels’ record has been so poor in the last few years, fans have protested in their seats by taking off their shirts and chanting “sell the team.”

The 79-year-old businessman/real estate developer had previously tried to buy the Dodgers when the team was for sale a decade ago.  

Kroenke is the owner of the Malibu Colony Shopping Center he purchased in 2005 for $68.5 million. He’s the largest private landowner in the country with 2.7 million acres to his name. He’s been married to a billionaire in her own right, Ann Walton Kroenke, since 1974. She is a Walmart heiress with a fortune estimated at nearly $14 billion.
